Riviera Maya Must-See: The Great Mesoamerican Reef

The Great Mesoamerican Reef is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, stretching almost 700 miles from the Riviera Maya down to Honduras. It’s worth taking a vacation just to see this incredible natural wonder filled with colorful coral, sea turtles and tropical fish. The protective barrier formed by the reef is part of what makes the beaches of Riviera Maya so nice and calm.

Snorkeling is easy and fun, but if you want to go deeper, many resorts offer free introductory scuba lessons. In fact, it only takes a few sessions over the course of a week to become a certified scuba diver.

I didn’t get to see a tortuga while I was snorkeling, but I’ll be back. Share any good snorkeling or scuba stories you have in the comments below.
