4* at best
What you need to know - The resort is really big, if you are in the first part of it (take a good look at the resort main picture), it takes at least 8-10 minutes to get to the beach. -There's 3 pools in the smaller section of the hotel and 3 pools in the biggest part ( the one you see on the main picture). -There's 2 buffet (one for the smaller section and one for the bigger one) -There's a lot of mosquitos at night, make sure to bring some OFF, as the resort has a lot of vegetation. Please note, the gift shop offers the OFF for the cost of 27$ US :( -The beach is beautiful ( white sand, clear water) -There's enough chairs everywhere (even at the beach) - There's no ''View'' - the resort is average and the way it was built doesn't allow to have a view on the ocean. You will not see the ocean until you arrived at the ocean. I wouldn't say that's it's a beautiful nor ugly resort, but there's only palm threes and grass. -It is a party hotel - lot of young wild souls. You can still find some peace at the relaxing pool, but keep in mind that you will still hear the party. -Quite often there's no towels available, you may need to wait 1 hour or 2. -The pillows are really small, more like cushions size. -There's nothing around the resort (except for other resorts). -The drinks aren't good, the alcool ratio versus juice isn't properly measured + there's no real juice. -When we arrived, we were expecting a drink and smiley staff, but it wasn't the case (compared to other Rius). Restaurants ( no reservation) -Japanese : 4/5 -Spanish : 3.5/5 -Steakhouse : 2/5 (really basic, no spices) -Buffet : 4/5 This is my 3rd Riu ( Panama Playa Blanca & Cancun Palace Costa Mujeres), out of the 3 this one comes in 3rd position. I recommend to read the reviews carefully. If you are looking for a real 5*, this is not it. It's a 4* at best.

NEVER AGAIN, even if it was free.
This was the worst RIU that I've ever experienced. The food was nasty. Some of the staff was rude. The room had ants, spiders & a flying roach. NO WASHCLOTHS. The toilet didn't work properly.

RIU Republica is terrible
This resort offers very little for adults. They do not have room service. We had to get new room keys every day of our stay. One the people we traveled with required stitches due to slipping on the tile walkways that connect the buildings. We had the pleasure of being stuck in an elevator at the resort. I asked room service for extra towels and was told NO! We had a blanket in our room but, oddly it disappeared before our last day, leaving us with only a sheet to sleep under. The balcony door of our room did not have a lock until our last night of the stay. Our travel group was split between the two sides of the resort. I will say that the staff in the bars and restaurants were always nice. The food is good but not great. All in all my wife and I will never stay at a RIU resort again. It was not what I would expect from a resort and have many experiences with resorts that do cater to their patrons

please bring a smile, your own washcloths and Roach Spray
Day 1 We arrived to hotel, the riu rep at front desk, took over 20 minutes to check us in, no welcome drink or smiles, at the front desk, everyone looked like they hated their jobs. After traveling all day we expected a great staff full of smiles. We went to our first room, which a long long walk, looked out on the patio, and our view was land fill of trash and noisy machinery. Called the front desk to try to get our second room, which was even farther than the other 1, we got lost several times. That night I saw a roach in bathroom, and I killed it went back to bed. day 2, went to take a shower and there was about 5 roaches in the shower, also we kept our close packed, did not want to bring roaches home, we called front desk they said it would not be a room available until 3, mind you this was 9am. We had to take a shower with roaches swimming in the shower, because water did not go down drain while taking a shower, oh let me mention we were afraid because the door handle to bathroom was on its last leg, even the freezer fell out of refrigerator on my toe. Not to mention we called several times for wash clothes, even asked the cleaning staff for a washcloth, there were none for the entire stay, the front desk suggested we go the shopping to buy 1, they even priced it for me, they mentioned that we can use hand towels, at this time I felt like a was in a third world county with no amenities. then we go to our third room but had to walk 15 minutes to front desk to get new key cards, no apology at all. We finally got a livable room that was 3 doors to the elevator, no more getting lost. I never seen so many staff people that were not happy, and I tipped very well. a lot of waiters could barely speak English, I had to ask questions with my phone, that was a first time I experienced his after staying 6 times in a riu resort in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay Riu Palace. I would say 3 days of our trip was horrible to unpack and pack again. 1 good note the entertainment staff were very pleasant, except at night, we saw a duo band 2 nights in a row and they were not very good, the parties only 2 a week, 1 party was after we arrived and the second 1 was when we were leaving. The hotel made us feel like we were less than. I had a ball with all the young folks because they were many. The pictures and videos will be put on YouTube for 75K viewers to watch. Excuse my grammar, but I am pissed off writing this.

Lobby horrible, everything else great
The lobby was the only bad thing, absolutely terrible service. Worst i have seen. Don’t waiste your time doing online check in because it doesn’t help you at the end. Not enough beach towel too. You have to fight for them which is not acceptable. Room keys keep on desactivating which is very annoying. The rest was great. Service outside the lobby is very good. Do not go there to relax. If you complain about the noise it is because you do not belong in that hotel
